Hi everyone! I bet some of you are wondering what I’m up to with a title like that and some of you probably know where I’m going. My guess is that Madi’s mom and Dinah, Bridget and Elliot’s mum both know what this post will be about. Many of you know that hump day is every Wednesday when we can start looking forward to the end of the work week. Thanks to the most recent Geico commercial all I can think about is the funny camel when I think about hump day. The hooking part is my most recent crochet project.
It doesn’t look like much yet, but when it is done it will be a cardigan. I wanted to use the Deborah Norville Serenity Garden yarn, which is the same yarn I made the shawl for my mom but instead of the red color I’m using the “Sea” color way. All the colors in it are my favorites. It is a fine weight yarn and since I’m still a beginner crocheter I wanted to find a pattern that already called for that weight yarn. It took a while but I found this nice cardigan pattern (pictured below) at Patternfish.
I just love the airy stitch pattern that is mostly double crochet and not difficult. So far the part I am working on is the main part of the body from the bottom edge to the arm holes. I have a few more rows to go before I start shaping around the armholes and the taper on the front edge at the top. Wish me luck on those next steps. The pattern is rated as “Easy”, but we will see just how easy it is for me to understand all the decreases and increases that are yet to come.
Here are some detail pictures of how the stitch pattern comes together.
There are rows of pairs of double crochet and then rows of fans. As I progress through the different areas I have to keep track of where in the pattern I am when I do the different areas.
I have to thank my sister for some guidance at the start. She is a master knitter and she helped me understand how to get the proper gauge to start the project. It only took me four tries to get the gauge correct. For you non-crocheters/knitters that means I ripped it out (we yarn loving peeps call this frogging) 3 times before the length of the starting piece was correct. It isn’t easy counting 222 starting chain stitches and getting it to come out to the right size. I’m happy to say that I think I have been consistent in keeping the proper stitch count on all the rows I’ve done so far.
I couldn’t finish this post without giving a shout out to Lynne of Dip Dip and the Bridge for giving me my start in crochet. We all know her as the mistress of the crochet mini-me’s, but without the tutorials she posted last year I wouldn’t be a hooker today!
The collies ate gorgeous, and I really like that pattern a lot. Can’t wait to see the finished product 🙂
That cardigan is gorgeous and I love the colours you are using

Cindy, that is amazing and I am full of admiration for you for making it! I love the cardi by the way and have saved it on my favourites. It is so long since I made anything for myself I would love to try it – it is just the sort of thing I would wear too.
I have copied a link that you might like that I saw the other day, it is for a little Summer sweater to wear over a vest top.
