Archive for March, 2015

Hi everyone! As you may know we have had one of the most brutal winters in local history. It is the last week of March and we still have most of our backyard covered in snow.

Last week of March 2015 and we still have snow!

Here is a little video I took panning around our yard.

If you can’t see the video you can go here to view it.

The weather forecast for later this week is hinting at temperatures near 70° F (around 21° C). Maybe we will actually see our lawn (or what’s left of it) later this week.

We haven’t been able to let Millie & Walter play much in the yard as the mushy snow has put a strain on Millie’s shoulder. We will show you later this week what we’ve been doing instead.

Guys Day logo

Hi everyone! It’s Walter here. Welcome to the Guys Day Zoomie Event! We guys sure are having a super fun time today all over Blogville. Check out Frankie & Ernie’s blog for links to all the fun events (wordpress blogs can’t add link parties to our posts 😦 ).

I have lots of action to show you so let’s get this party started. I’m so excited because we have guys joining us from all over the world and a few different species other than dogs.

Let’s start the action off with one of our global and non-canine entries.

Speedy the House Bunny really has the moves!

Speedy’s name says it all. He is perfect for this event. Thanks for joining the fun from across the pond Speedy!

The next entry is so fast he is all a blur.

Sarge is too fast to focus on.

Police Commissioner Sarge must be trying to apprehend some criminal he is moving so fast.

Bentley rushes back with his tennis ball

I’m not really sure if Bentley is moving in this picture but he probably had to move some to get that tennis ball. BOL!

Here is some high flying international action.

Easy is flying high!

Easy is flying high!

Easy is jumping so high his ears got cut off.

Up next are a couple of brothers from the Pacific North West of the United States.

Jakey

Jakey and Arty’s brother Bilbo decided to sit this event out due to his arthur itis. I hope he is able to enjoy some of the other events today.

While we are in the area let’s check out my friend Nim from Seattle. He sent us this video of some super fast action.

If you can’t see the video you can go here to view it.

Nim may not be moving very fast but we bet he is making his mom dizzy walking around in circles. BOL!

Let’s see what a couple of brothers from South Africa are up to.

Wally is so fast he doesn't touch the ground.

Sammy sure has the moves

Those Scottie brothers sure know how to zoom around the yard.

Let’s stick with the brother theme and see what Socks and Fenris are up to.

Socks is a very serious kitty

I’ve heard from my girlfriend Tuiren (Socks sister) that Socks is a kitty not to be messed with so no chasing the kitty boys.

Fenris loves to play ball

My buddy Fenris loves a great game of fetch.

Remember guys no chasing the kitty!

With a look like that I don’t think Socks has to worry about any of us dogs chasing after him. I’m giving him lots of room.

Now let’s go down under to see what Dui is up to.

Another high flying international Scottie zooms across the field.

Here is another guy that has to move fast to keep his sisters in line.

Gussie sure has some moves

Gussie says that keeping close to the humans usually leads to some treats. Good advice Gussie!

My last guests are two of the most well known dachsies in all of Blogville.

Frankie and Ernie moved so fast this was the only shot their mom could get and here is where they ran.

One takes the high road and the other takes the low road but they both end up back on the porch.

Last but not least it’s my turn! After over a week of above freezing temps we still have snow covering most of our yard. Here is a shot of me from one of our big snow storms this year.

I love catching snow balls and running with them

I don’t know about any of you but I’m a bit worn out from all that action. Let’s check out some of the other Guys Day action and see if we can find some refreshments.

Thanks for joining me zooming around Blogville.

Hi everyone it’s Cindy here. Today I’m combining two blog hops into one post. First up is Wild Bird Wednesday.

Wild Bird Wednesday

It’s the time of the year when our yard birds are strengthening their pair bonds or finding new mates. Northern Cardinals are year round residents in our yard. Here is a picture I captured last year of a male feeding a female.

Mr Mrs Cardinal feeding

Another of our year round residents is the American Goldfinch.

They don’t have much color at this time of year but eventually the males will be a brilliant yellow.

Now on to Hooking on Hump Day! A while ago I did a post about a blue bird I crocheted from the Holiday Crochet magazine.

Holiday Crochet - Love of Crochet - cover

I have been happy working with the Knit Picks CotLin™ yarn for these projects. I’ve had the cardinal done since before Christmas but I’m just getting around to show it to you now.

The cardinal includes a little felt piece on its face that I sewed on.

The pattern is very easy to follow and it works up quickly. There are four parts to each bird, the body, tail and two wings.

crochet cardinal - back view

You can see where I added the hanging loop at the back of the head. It is a good place to balance from and hangs very well.

Next up is the goldfinch.

crochet goldfinch - side view

The goldfinch also has a piece of felt sewn on top of his head. One thing I did differently from the pattern were the wings and tail. The pattern calls for you to use yellow and black to create the wings but since I’m more of a realist and a goldfinch doesn’t have gold on their wings I just did them in black. To add the white bars I embroidered those using white floss.

As you can see from the back view I also added some embroidery to the tail.

I hope you enjoyed this mash up of blog hops that I’m calling Hooking on Wild Bird Hump Day! What a great way to combine two of my loves.

Reminder for Boyz Only!

Wild Bird Wednesday

Hi everyone! Sorry I haven’t been around the blogs much the past few days but I was hit with a stomach bug late Saturday night and I’m just starting to feel myself again.

While I was down for the count we had a first ever avian visitor to our yard. I was feeling so bad that I didn’t even get out of bed to see it so I had to rely on Charlie’s photography skills to verify his find.

Northern Saw-Whet Owl on suet feeder

He appeared to be sleeping and Charlie was able to sneak up fairly close. With his long lens he got some great pictures.

No other birds are coming to the feeder for a while.

He was still in the yard later in the afternoon when Charlie took the dogs out for a play session. The owl was tucked into the scrub behind the feeder and Charlie said the owl kept a close eye on the pups but never moved. The dogs had no idea he was there.

By the next day he was gone. Maybe he will return and bring a friend. According to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology All About Birds online guide we are in the year round range of the Northern Saw-whet Owl. We may never see him again as they are usually nocturnal. Judging by the fact that he never opened his eyes while Charlie was photographing him he certainly seemed to be trying to catch some “z’s”. Maybe we will hear them at night when the weather is nicer? We will keep you posted.

I hope you have enjoyed this edition of Wild Bird Wednesday and will take some time to stop by the blog hop host too.

This post is for boyz eyes only

Guys Day logo

Hi guys! It’s Walter here. All us boyz know we are going to have a great day celebrating all things guys love to do.

Walter - zooming through the snow - lr

I know you all have seen what fun Millie and I have chasing each other around our big yard so I decided to invite all the boyz of Blogville over for a Guys Day Zoomie Fest!

Don’t worry I will make sure Millie isn’t around so she can’t chase anybody and wrestle you to the ground. I think I might send her to have a spa day or something like that.

Walter - zooming with snowball in mouth - lr

I hope by the day of the event there won’t be any snow on the ground but the way this winter is going anything is possible. If you want to participate send me a picture of you zooming around anywhere real fast. It can be indoors or out, on snow or grass. It doesn’t really matter since in Blogville there are no seasons. You can email your picture to cindywelch(AT)rochester(DOT)rr(DOT)com. Please have them to us by March 20th.

If you want to find out more of the Guys Day events pop over to Frankie and Ernie’s place for more information.
