Nature Friday – Busy As A Bee

Hi everyone! It’s Millie & Walter here. Thursday we enjoyed our first snow of the season. That is a few weeks later than our average but we aren’t complaining.

We enjoy watching all the critters in our yard.

To warm things up we wanted to show you some of the last bees that were hanging out in our yard a few weeks ago.

There were just a few hydrangea that the honey bees could enjoy so they were working hard for what might have been their last supper of the season.

The perennial geranium was also still blooming.

The honey bees were also enjoying the geranium that was still in bloom.

We’ve learned to stay away from all those stinging insects.

The bumble bees were lapping up all the nectar they could find from the eupatorium.

I’m dreaming of the last of the warm fall days.

By now the perennials have all been cut down and the bees are all hibernating (or whatever bees do during the cold weather). We’re watching the snow falling outside and hoping that it accumulates enough to enjoy our first snow zoomies of the year.

Nature Friday – Bugs and Blooms

Hi everyone! It’s Cindy here. Summer is near the end and so is the growing season for the flowers in our yard. We still have a few daylilies blooming.

Some of the hosta still have flowers too.

Another late bloomer in our yard is our non-vining clematis.

The various bees around our yard seem to be working overtime collecting pollen.

This little guy was so loaded down with pollen he could barely take off.

Now those are full saddle bags

Next I want to show you some dragonflies.

Lastly I want to show you one of the many leopard frogs we have in our yard.

There are so many of these frogs in the lawn that when I mow the lawn I have to go very slow around the edge of the grass (where they seem to be the most plentiful) to try not to squash or mow over them. We seem to be having a banner year for leopard frogs in our yard this year. It usually takes me about 2 hours to mow our lawn but since the frogs have appeared it’s taken me about 1/2 hour longer because I’ve had to go much slower. I want to get a bumper sticker for my tractor that says, “I Brake for Frogs”!
