Archive for November, 2012

I know you are probably wondering how I can put those two things together but it’s really quite simple. Angel Nina was never a fan of having her picture taken, but with Millie I am trying to get her used to it as much as possible so I decided to have a photo shoot for this year’s Christmas card. Of course I never do anything simply so I decided to make a santa hat and scarf for Millie to wear for her picture.

After a short search on the internet I found a santa hat pattern I thought I could tackle. Of course I don’t remember where I found the pattern, but there are at least a hundred free ones out there.

I had already picked up some red and green yarn with some sparkle to it so I was able to get started. This pattern also called for Fun Fur yarn to use for the rim and pom-pom so there was a bit of a challenge there. For the scarf I just improvised and used a row of single crochet and then four rows of double crochet in the green and white and then added some fringe in the white.

After I finished the hat I measured Millie for a chin strap and added that by hand with black elastic. It fit her quite well and with her black fur you couldn’t see the elastic at all.

I have to say that working with the fun fur yarn was quite a challenge. I had to pull it out a couple of times after loosing track of where I was, but I love how it came out.

The next challenge of course was to get Millie to be willing to wear it and then pose for a picture. She came to us knowing the command to sit, but we haven’t gotten to “stay” in our classes yet so that was my biggest challenge. She has been willing to put on her bandana so I was hoping that hat wearing wouldn’t bother her too much and I was right. She also didn’t have too much problem with the scarf except wanting to use it as a tug toy at first. After a couple of sessions with plenty of treats she didn’t even try to shake the hat off.

You could tell that she wasn’t that crazy about wearing the hat and our final picture ended up being one where she was just wearing the scarf. In the end I think I like her without the hat better because then you can see her cute ears. Now just to prove that she did wear the hat and scarf I will give you a sneak peek at one of our out-takes. You will have to wait until Christmas day to see the final picture or be one of the lucky ones that signed up for the card exchange that Jazzi arranged.

Does that face say “Are we done yet?” or what?

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! The first thing I have to do is to credit my husband, Charlie, with the picture from the Black & White Sunday post since many of you asked. He really likes doing artsy pictures and converting them to black and white.

Now on to our day today. While I was prepping the big bird Charlie took Millie out for some play time.

The weather was very mild for us this time of year reaching 60 deg. F. and very sunny all day.  Millie always likes to start her time outdoors with a good stick. This stick is from our cherry tree and has been in the yard for a while. She is an expert retriever but likes to take a rest to nibble on it for a while too.

Does this rock make my butt look big?

In addition to all the shrubs and trees in our yard we also “planted” a lot of rocks in the yard. All the rocks were dug up on our property and most of them were moved using our tractor. Millie has recently discovered the rocks and likes to climb on them.

I’m Queen of the Hill!

Millie just started jumping on the rock on her own so we have been using a command (“hup”) to tell her to get on it and stay. She loves to find the rocks in the yard and climb on.

After Millie and Charlie were done playing outside they came in and Mille helped me clean up after whipping up my twice baked sweet potatoes. I was real happy that while the mixer was whirling around she was curious, but not scared of the new noise at all.

She really enjoyed diving into the bowl too.

What are you looking at Mom?

We had a nice dinner with all the fixin’s (sorry no pictures…too busy eating). When we first filled up our plates and took them to the dining room Millie stayed in the kitchen and after a minute we heard a whimper. It seemed that she was miffed that we didn’t fix a plate for her too.  She did enjoy cleaning all the plates after we were done eating. All in all I think Millie enjoyed her first Thanksgiving even if she didn’t get a plate full for herself.

This year has been a bit tough with Nina’s passing but we have a lot to be thankful for too. We are thankful that Nina gave us over 14 wonderful years. I’m thankful for all the love and support from my friends and family near and far. We are also thankful that this adorable, loving, bundle of fur has come into our lives. Thanks for being you Millie! We love you!

Hand-made Custom Tote Bags

Are you looking for a unique gift for a special someone? Well look no further.

A couple of fellow bloggers recently commissioned me to create some special gifts for friends and family to be given as Christmas presents and I wanted to share them with you all. I love creating these custom bags and I know the recipients will be thrilled too.

When I first let it be known that I would make custom designed bags, Agnes (What’s Her Name from Dachsies with Moxie) ordered about a dozen bags for me to make over the course of a few months. The last few would be Christmas presents for her mother and best friend. She also wanted one for herself and only told me to make it pink (her favorite color). She was confident that I would pick the best embroidery and fabric for her and I think I did good.

You can click on the image to make it bigger. The embroidery is called Dachshund Sketch and the first time I saw it I knew it was perfect for Agnes.

The next tote bag I made was for one of Agnes’ friends who has a Bichon Frise and loves purple. One side of the tote has a full body embroidery of a Bichon and the other side has a paw print that says “I ♥ My Bichon Frise”.

The final tote bag for Agnes was one for her mother. She wanted it to coordinate with the clutch bag I made as a Mother’s Day gift for her mom with a similar embroidery of the Virgin Mary. I altered the original embroidery to fit on the exterior pocket for this bag and I think it turned out great!

Do you remember when Lily Belle and her mom came to visit us? Well they were here to pick out fabric for this beautiful red and black tote bag. This bag is also a gift for a dachshund loving friend. It is a little smaller than the other tote bags. It is the same height, but the width is smaller.

The interior of this bag has the same features as all the other bags. Each bag has two zippered pockets and two regular pockets and the zippered pockets are open in the back for extra storage.

If you are interested in ordering a one of a kind creation for someone special on your holiday shopping list you can visit my Etsy shop to place your order. Just click on the link for the custom large tote bag or click on the “Request Custom Item” link on the menu to the left on my Etsy shop home page.

Not a Dachshund or Bichon Frise lover? No problem. There are many non breed specific embroideries that can be used to embelish your tote bag or you can visit Embroidery Library to pick out one of your favorite dog or cat breed and I will add it to my collection.

Hi everyone! It’s Millie here. Today is my 6 month birthday! I am half way to being a grown up girl. We took a fun trip to Petsmart today but don’t have any pictures to show you. Mommy and daddy wanted to concentrate on walking me around and having me meet other people and dogs at the store. We were very lucky that there was a puppy obedience class going on so I got to meet quite a few of them.

Tomorrow is a big day for me. I will be starting my Adolescent Kindergarten class. I do expect to get some pictures of that action and will report back on everything we do.

The main reason I am writing today is to tell you about an amazing delivery I got earlier this week. First I had to give the box a thorough snoofing. I was a little worried since the box got squished, but mommy assured me that the contents would be just fine.

Mommy helped me get the box open.  Can you see what the piece of paper says on top of the box? It says Yellowstone Antlers! I love elk antlers! My daddy told me that he did a search on the internet and found a great source for my favorite treat.

Watch this video to see all the action of me getting the antlers out of the box.

If you can’t see the video you can go here to view it.

Mommy ordered me 3 pounds of elk antlers which turned out to be 10 antlers. The above picture shows one that we bought around here (on the left) and some of the new ones on the right. According to mommy, with the cost of shipping each antler cost only $6.30! The one on the left above cost over twice that!

As you saw in the video, daddy helped me pick one out and I ran to the bedroom to enjoy it.

It was delicious! I love the split ones so you can get right into the marrow part.

Really mom, could you stop pointing that thing in my face so I can enjoy this elk antler?

Note from Cindy: We purchased these antlers and just wanted to tell everyone about them. It is really a great bargain if your dogs like to chew on antlers. We will definitely be ordering more when Millie finishes these.
